Standard class tourist hotels

Day 1     Lima to Cusco

The evening prior to your tour, we will meet you in your hotel and present our company with a full briefing of the program. In the morning, private transfer to Lima airport where we take a scheduled flight to Cusco; flight time approximately 55 minutes. On arrival, private transfer to the hotel and time to acclimatize to the altitude of 3340 meters above sea level. In the afternoon, our guided city tour begins with a visit of Cusco Cathedral and then onto the Temple of the Sun, Qoricancha. We’ll also visit the imposing fortress Sacsayhuaman.

Day 2     Cusco to Ollantaytambo

In advance of the crowds, we’ll depart Cusco early as we head towards the first of four archeological sites, Qenqo. A short distance from here, we’ll find the Royal Baths of Tambo Machay and then onto the terraced landscapes of Pisac. Allowing time for lunch along the Urubamba valley, our final visit will be the ruins of Ollantaytambo located in the village of the same name. In the evening there are many good restaurants to choose from before a good nights sleep at 2400 masl.

Day 3     Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu

We now board the train for a scenic Journey to the town of Aguas Calientes. This is a great journey allowing us views of snowcapped mountains, rural Andean life and vastly changing flora as we descend to around 2000masl. Having checked in to our hotel, we take a bus along the Hiram Bingham highway to the citadel of Machu Picchu. Your tour will visit the principle areas of the city namely the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sundial, the Temple of the Three Windows and various burial sites. After the tour you will have time to stroll around the archaeological site at your own pace or climb the Huayna Picchu Mountain from where you can appreciate views of Machu Picchu from a different perspective. On return to the village of Aguas Calientes, a visit to the hot thermal baths are ideal to round off a superb day.

Day 4     Machu Picchu to Cusco

After breakfast, we join the morning train service back to Ollantaytambo.  Now by road, we travel to Chinchero thought to be the royal estate of Topa Inca, son of Pachacuteq. On reaching the plaza, the visitor will be greeted by an Inca wall set with a series of grandiose trapezoidal niches. The church that overlooks the plaza is well noted for its beautifully painted walls and ceilings – very different from anything you might have seen in Cusco. Apart from its archeological significance Chinchero is famed for its locally produced textiles presenting traditional styles along with more contemporary designs.

Time now to move on to the village of Maras and the earthworks of Moray. The village is recognized for its many carved lintels and doorways but our investigations will take us behind the village to the sinkholes of Moray where it is thought the Incas developed the land as an experimental agricultural site. From here we retrace our tracks and visit the salt fields of Salineras. Literally, thousands of salt pans are worked by the local inhabitants and just by walking through these fields, we can appreciate the arduous labour required to collect this mineral.

Finally back to Cusco and an enjoyable evening in the city.

Day 5     Cusco  -  free day

There are of course many attractions in a city of this importance which you now have the day to enjoy. You will find many plazas and back streets with artists showing their works, ceramists, weaving displays and many restaurants presenting local and international cuisine.
